Just saw it this week at the book store here in Brazil. It makes me wish to buy the whole collection again. Just because of your art. Fabulous!!! Wonderful work!!! Five new master pieces. Thank you.
Oh my god.... such amazing composition. Everything from the off-center balance, to little flourish of blue light that draws you in. Even the lines and texture of the mountain guides your eye to the figures. It all works. Even how the horizon is illustrated beautifully. It all works.
This is one of the rare visual representations of that scene which makes it justice. You've captured the emotion so well not only with the angle, but with the contrast. For me, seeing the mountains beyond so clearly (and I know the description is in the book) kills the little mystery 'beyond the wall' had until Jon went up there. A more blurry look and maybe just having the fog in the horizon without mountains could enhance the enigma. But then again, all the anticipation built up until that point resolves because they see it; it's right there. The clarity of the landscape adds to the reality of wildlings and the life beyond the wall. I guess both ways work.
Regarding Castle Black represented by the contrasting bright orange: I know you'd have to consider the aesthetic aspect of the painting, but I'd doubt that about five hundred men would spread that widely considering the scale of the wall. But the contrast is a very nice touch.
I would like to purchase a print of this from you! Name your price
I love this.
